New FiOS installation

OK, we got FiOS installed yesterday. Just a place to write down my thoughts

  • Guide interface is NOT as nice as the DirecTV. Nice that they blow it up to a larger font to see it, but you sacrifice the view of what's coming up in the next few hours.
    • Don't see the cast of the movie either, until you select the movie and pop up the full Info screen.
    • Better than the Cox menu though, that's horrible :-)
  • Box starts up faster than the DTV one.
  • Installed VZ media manager to play songs from the PC storage and show photos. Also signed up for the Beta to stream things from some download sites (not YouTube :-( )
    • It imported iTunes play lists - cool!
    • First song I chose to play hung the system - had to reboot the STB. Lost my Sox game that was being recorded (the recording did NOT restart when the system came back up (that's bad - DTV did that). (on the plus side, the Sox were down 7-0 in that time. Back to playing with the TV!)
  • update: FSN on FiOS is labeled Comcast Sports Net. That means USC games in HD as long as its the national game. Not sure what happens if they are not. Luckily most games are ABC/ESPN so I know I can get them.
  • Problems with the HDMI connections. It appears to be a well-known problem going on for over two years now. The 7216 DVR has a handshake problem that causes the picture to drop out periodically. I've been seeing it using the HDMI->Pioneer SC-25->Sony KDS-R60XBR1  and I read that the Pioneer Kuro 141 see it too :-(
