Went tent camping at Rocky Creek, in Summerville, TX. Stayed home Friday because a big thunderstorm was going through the area, with tornado watches in effect. Allison got to go to Natty Ware's birthday party at Summer's Swim academy, so all was not lost.
Left early Sat morning and got there by about 10 or 10:30. Our original site (#125) was not only right on the water, but almost in the water. Wind was coming off the water at about 20kts. Changed to #134 back by the woods.
Set up camp and then went to lunch at the Brenham airport. They've got a small 50's diner there with pretty good food and great atmosphere. Then went on to the Monestary/Miniature Horse Farm in Independence. It was right across from the coffee place and the Lavender farm oOn the way home, went by the Rose emporium and bought some wood for the campfire off a guy's porch on 390 just before turning onto 39. Also checked out the other camp grounds on Somverville Lake. Overlook park was OK, but kind of plain. The was another park on the other side of the damn that was very plain, no tree cover at all. Forget the name but it started with a W. Yeuga was smaller than Rocky Creek, but pretty good. There was a little area near the beach the kids could have played in. Camp sites 14-16 were up on the hill above the beach, also near the playground were pretty nice. Really meant more for campers (electric & water), but could pitch a tent back near the hill. There was one really nice spot in the next group of sites 2nd one in from the road, with a shelter and overlooking the same little beach.
Back at the campground, we went for a short walk, played on the playground, and then set up the fire to cook dinner. Couldn't keep the camp stove lit because the wind was too strong. Had hot dogs over the fire and cold beans, 3 bean salad, and pickles.
About 30minutes before the sun went down, the wind hadn't died off and it was getting colder, so we packed up & went home.
Things we did right:
Good campground
Things we forgot:
Gloves or Tools for moving logs on the fire
Axe or machete
Camp Shovel
Soap (there were showers)
Things we could have left home:
Brought too many sleeping bags
Would like something smaller than the full size inflatable mattress.
